Local Surgeon Receives Specialized Training for Breast Cancer Surgery and Reconstruction

Breast reconstructive surgery is now available through Surgery Group of Grand Island. Board certified general surgeon, Brant Luebbe, M.D., from Surgery Group of Grand Island, completed his training at the American Society of Breast Diseases Annual School of Oncoplastic Surgery in Dallas, Texas in December 2011.

Luebbe received extensive training from internationally renowned faculty, and observed demonstrations of the newest breast cancer surgical and reconstructive techniques. Oncoplastic Surgery combines cancer removal with reconstruction to improve the appearance of the breast after surgery, minimizing the scarring associated with traditional invasive surgery. It also offers more cosmetic approaches to breast conserving therapy for patients choosing lumpectomy rather than mastectomy.

Breast reconstructive surgery is a new service offered by Surgery Group of Grand Island, and is a welcome addition to the local healthcare scene. Until now, patients would often travel elsewhere for reconstructive services.

Dr. Luebbe will share Oncoplastic techniques with area healthcare professionals to emphasize the importance of having this service available locally. A presentation for the Grand Island medical community is being planned for January 24, 2012 at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Breast cancer and reconstructive surgery was a natural progression for Dr. Luebbe, who has been a general surgeon since 2005. “I have been aware of the need for these services in our local area for quite some time,” said Dr. Luebbe, “especially since serving on the Multi-Disciplinary Conference at Saint Francis Medical Center. Breast cancer is an extremely overwhelming disease. Providing patients with a local alternative for breast cancer and reconstructive surgery will help to alleviate the stress associated with travel and unfamiliar surroundings.”

In addition to breast cancer diagnosis, surgery and reconstruction, Surgery Group of Grand Island offers a wide range of laparoscopic, colonoscopy and gastroscopy procedures.
